Vancouver-based Greek-Colombian Canadian artist YUNG MAS has built an underground identity around the possibilities of warped textures and unconventional rap structures. On “The GXP Files,” he takes that curiosity into darker, more immersive territory. The 13-track project follows his 10-track release “#GXP” as the second volume of an ongoing sonic experiment, drawing together psychedelic trap, underground rap, electronic production, and hyper-grunge aesthetics. YUNG MAS describes the direction as taking it “bax 2 tha basixZ,” although the music is anything but plain. Its sense of purpose comes from how repetition, atmosphere, and carefully placed details shape the listening experience from beginning to end.
“price of admission (V2)” makes the album’s intentions clear almost immediately. Electro-grunge sounds gather at the start before a trap-driven drop brings the track into focus. The effect is nocturnal and disorienting, with hazy melodies and restrained vocals that seem to hover inside the production rather than sit above it. There is a roughness to the mix, but it feels purposeful. Each sound gets enough space to register, while the rhythm keeps the track grounded.
That balance carries through much of “The GXP Files.” Deep 808s, sharp percussion, woozy synths, and samples form the backbone of arrangements that rarely need to become busy to hold attention. YUNG MAS works with small variations and repeating phrases, letting slight changes in tone or timing alter the mood. His voice follows a similar logic, shifting between conversational rap, flat melodic lines, sing-rapping, and repeated chants. Ad-libs, processing, and subtle inflections do much of the expressive work, giving these tracks personality without crowding their instrumental spaces.
On “604 (V2),” the sense of space is especially effective. Booming low-end percussion anchors an otherwise floating, psychedelic arrangement. YUNG MAS keeps his delivery loose, almost detached, and his voice dissolves into the instrumental at moments. The track moves with the heavy, blurred feeling of a late night, putting its atmosphere at least on equal footing with the words themselves.
The album can be more outwardly energetic too. “41, 42 3style (GXP ANTHEM V2)” mixes rapping, melodic phrases, and chanting around a repetitive hook, with pulsing electronics supplying the momentum. “819am 3style (GXP ANTHEM V2)” leans into funkier, hyper-electronic sounds, while “murda dance (V2)” settles into an insistent groove built from thick bass and treated vocals. These changes in pace are welcome. The production may shift toward the dance floor, but the same hazy, slightly distorted identity remains intact.
The project’s cohesion speaks to the attention YUNG MAS gives to psychoacoustics, immersive mixing, sequencing, and controlled sonic variation. Each track approaches the #GXP universe from a slightly different angle, while the overall progression suggests an artist thinking about how the album feels as one complete listen.
That attention to detail is consistent with his wider DIY approach. Across an extensive catalog of albums and EPs, YUNG MAS has pursued independent creative control, developing his sound through successive releases rather than following industry expectations. “The GXP Files” continues that process with a confident sense of direction. The project is streaming now.
