Mac has also toured with some of the best musicians of his generation and is now the owner of the label Cuppa Joe Music from where he composes, produces, and engineers his as well as other artists’ music. An effortlessly charming artist whose best times certainly lay ahead as much as they have happened in the past, you can expect so much more from this revered achiever.
When he made the “The Dream Is Free” album, he had a few melodic ideas left in his head and that is how the bonus tracks, “I Need You” and “When You’re Smiling At Me” came about. He had all the intentions but releasing them and it’s a pleasure he thought otherwise because there is so much sonic intrigue in every one of these tracks!
“When You’re Smiling At Me” is a honeyed R&B masterpiece with tasty licks of pop-rock percussion to pique your interest throughout the track’s length. Actually, this track fascinatingly serves as the perfect springboard for Mac’s versatility to shine because it is not his natural style (not that he is limited, but like most artists, Joe has his own consistent brand.)
By combining the edge of modern R&B with deep melodies of pop rock, Joe managed to achieve a remarkable blend of styles and ideas in this phenomenal tune. Combining those lush textures with catchy hooks and that integration of immaculate backing choral harmonies is why this is an undeniable favorite. It makes this tune unique and not that you’re concerned but Joe feels really comfortable over the beats and delivers a commendable performance worthy of his stature.
