It’s true; this is the kind of atypical music, not one that you can easily restrain to a certain genre or behold to a specific stylistic stereotype, and guess what? It makes the music feel so surreal, thrilling, and fascinating. “EPISODE 1: ORIGIN: DOOM ZOOM: THE GEEK SWITCH” is an 8-track project from Edmonton, Canada-based artist BoJack, who is here for a good time and not a long one. The inspiration behind this kind of music ranges from the earthly to the otherworldly as he tries to connect with a listener in any way possible—palpably or mysteriously. It does not matter as long as he makes you feel good and transports you to a certain state where you get to escape from the chaos of everyday doom, even if for mere minutes…it’s all worth it.
Back to the music. We have already established that it is uncanny and fascinating, as BoJack manages to make you think, feel, and simply escape with these sonic creations that just about meld the senses into this unique and deeply intriguing listening experience.
The music features eclectic sounds ranging from pop, alternative, atmospheric hip-hop, rap, and haunting soundscapes that defy stylistic logic and conventions. At the end of your listening experience, you will indeed feel that you have been thoroughly entertained if not uplifted, empowered, and haunted.
For me, the lyrics here largely bend towards surrealism with psychology-influenced dramedy stories in which vivid imagination is grounded with can’t-make-it-up drama, haunting melodies, and alluring vocals.
“LA BEBE” for example, is so pop-sy with a stunning clash of bass, drums, piano, and percussion, making for a lively beat that features BoJack’s processed vocals floating nicely over this pop candor. The song feels refreshingly familiar yet unheard of…it’s something so exciting, and yet you can’t wrap your head around it. It requires more than one listening experience.
“DESERT MOUSE” is upbeat and driving with an unmissable hip-hop quality as BoJack shines with his unique vocals and rap-sing fluidity, transporting a listener to a mysteriously hot realm where nothing else makes sense apart from the music playing.
Even for a jam like “THE BAESIC BASIS,” a listener will love it for what it is because it is the kind of music that is more felt and more experienced as opposed to just heard. It spells something haunting and rap-like, but you cannot box it just yet.
Well, “EPISODE 1: ORIGIN: DOOM ZOOM: THE GEEK SWITCH” is quite simple for your ears only. I feel the more I try to explain this intriguing music, the more I strip it off its fascination and thrill that makes it so surreal in the first place.
