Music has always been the creative outlet for one singer and songwriter, David Green, who hails from Los Angeles. He is a gem who possesses an innate penchant for writing catchy tunes with relatable narratives. Inspired by all things music as well as her family, David always pours unbridled love and passion into every track he writes. Being an avid storyteller, David is influenced by real-life happenings, drawing inspiration and motivation for her music from personal experiences and real-life events.
It cannot be in contention that David Green is a musical auteur. And in today’s era of mainstream music as a cooperative and collaborative project, that’s a rare thing to find. To star as both the vocal and starring lead of your musical video requires a certain conviction of vision, one that “David Green demonstrates in spades with his latest release, “Close Again.”
In less than three minutes — perfect length for today’s ADD/social media-addled mind and, more pressingly, for a record label demo — this heartwarming release manages to say all that can (and should) be said about the tragedy of wanting a lost lover back. Wanting them back, but knowing they’re probably gone for good. Wanting them back, and not really caring about what else you wrought in that quest.
David Green, a passionate pianist, and singer-songwriter penned this track smack dab in the middle of the pandemic — right at those rare moments in between two subsequent infection spikes — just as the precautionary restrictions were beginning to loosen and everything seemed, for a second at least, to be going back to the way it was.
The inspiration, at least partly, was to try and evoke the distinct feeling of hopefulness and closeness that we had all consentingly lost and made taboo even.
It’s a remarkably clever thing he does: using stop motion photography to show the day-to-day ennui of a man nursing a broken heart. Not to mention the less-than-subtle allusions to early 2010s pop, with its attendant optimism, color, and upbeat tempo — characteristic of someone inspired by the piercing vocals of Adam Levine, the vulnerability of Sam Smith, the surreal visuals of MØ and Stromae, and allusions to, he absolutely manages to sell this catchy bop.
Not a lot of details are revealed to us about David’s lost love, but we know that “[she] knows [him] better than [he] knows [him]self”. His exhibitionist passion — his willingness to show himself at his most vulnerable and to offer it as the song’s emotional core — is what makes “Close Again” memorable. It’s presented as nothing to be ashamed of: to yearn for a time and love now lost, to wear this longing as a badge of honor.
David Green is about to release his first full-length album. It’s going to be titled “Happy Tears” and it’s coming out in a few months. Follow his socials, mark November 11 on your calendar, and dedicate your entire life to waiting for the music video.
