Rozen Lalas was born in the Philippines and has lived in different countries, including Ghana, Bombay, India, New Delhi, Bangkok, and Lagos, Nigeria, before going to study in the UK, then Michigan before finally settling in her now current residence in Los Angeles, California. Rozen’s inspiration for her music began at an early age, as she enjoyed listening to various genres of music. By listening to notable 90s pop and R&B artists such as Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Destiny Child, and Aaliyah, she molded her love for the genre and ultimately influenced her unique compositions and the music she creates now.
Another notable influence in her life was her late dad, who unfortunately passed away on July 21, 2022, as a result of cancer. He was a guitar player, and his profound love for music was passed on to her.
“in my feelings” was written three months after Rozen’s dad passed away, a period marked by deep, inconsolable grief and sorrow. One day she flew to Colorado, got into the studio, and in 30 minutes, this emotional tune was created.
It is often said that time heals all wounds, but the greater the loss, the deeper the cut, and the more difficult it is to become whole again. You can feel the raw melancholic emotions—the combined feelings of hurt, reminiscence, and profound hope—in her voice as she performs this song.
The guitar riffs really set the tone for this tune, which features melodies and harmonies arranged with meticulous attention to detail. Rozen Lalas’ vocal harmonies are golden. Her angelic voice holds so much effortless power, and she packs such an appropriate punch with her stunning performance that leaves nothing to be desired.
There is that old school vibe that comes out strikingly throughout the entirety of this heartfelt, intimate, and thoughtful performance.
Listening to this performance, it really dawned on me how crazy it is that pain can be turned into art for others to escape into; because that is what Rozen does with “in my feelings”. She is such a gem!
